The South Tyneside Private Rented Accreditation Scheme began life as a successful pilot to improve the management and physical standards of private rented homes in Rekendyke & Boldon Newtown, however it was rolled out borough wide in 2008.

The scheme covers all types of private rented accommodation across the borough, from purpose built flats, Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) and single houses. The accreditation standard is based upon existing legislation, plus facilities normally considered to constitute a decent modern standard.

The main objective of the South Tyneside Private Rented Accreditation Scheme is to make a positive intervention in communities by working with landlords to improve maintenance & management standards in the private rented sector. This is done through recognising and rewarding responsible landlords, thus setting a recognised standard for others to aim towards and achieve.

The scheme has been fully embraced by many private landlords in the borough and recently both South Tyneside College and The Lettings Group (TLG) have joined the scheme - TLG with all their directly managed properties and South Tyneside College through the accreditation of all properties advertised through their lettings service.

A simple property inspection is all that is required to determine the properties standard and the services we offer are free. We are so confident in the standard that we offer free Energy Performance Certificates for every newly accredited property and are always happy to advise when improvements are being made to properties to ensure you make the right improvements first time.

N.B. property owners and management agents are solely responsible for maintaining their properties in a satisfactory condition and adhering to minimum standards of management practices. Nothing in this scheme changes these legal responsibilities in any way.
